Unpaid Interns: Real World Work Or Just Free Labor?

Over 1 million Americans a year work as interns. About half of them are unpaid. Alex Footman was among them, until recently. He worked as an unpaid intern for Black Swan, a film that won numerous awards and grossed over $300 million. Footman was hoping an internship with Black Swan would open doors in Hollywood. Instead, it has made him rethink his career plans. "This was six months of my life which left me nowhere further along in my career than before," Footman says. "It was not a learning experience and that was what I had expected. This really just seemed like I was just working and wasn't getting paid for it."http://www.npr.org/2011/11/12/142224360/unpai...free-labor

Mexican interior minister killed in crash

Mexico's interior minister, Jose Francisco Blake Mora, was killed in a helicopter crash Friday, the government said. The helicopter went down in the Xochimilco area south of Mexico City, government spokeswoman Alejandra Sota said. Also killed in the crash were Undersecretary for Legal Affairs and Human Rights Felipe Zamora and the ministry's press office chief, Jose Alfredo Garcia, she said. In all, nine people perished -- seven passengers and two crew members, she said. In July 2010, Mexican President Felipe Calderon appointed Blake Mora to the post that oversees security efforts against drug cartels in Mexico. That battle has cost thousands of lives. "I grieve his loss" and those of the other victims, Calderon said in a national address, http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/11/world/americas/...ml?npt=NP1

Major league catcher kidnapped in Venezuela

Venezuelan federal authorities on Thursday dispatched their "best investigators" to track the kidnappers of Major League Baseball catcher Wilson Ramos, the country's justice minister said. Ramos, a rising star for the Washington Nationals, was snatched from his family home in central Venezuela by gunmen Wednesday night, a team spokeswoman said. The 24-year-old emerged as the Nationals' top catcher this past season. He had a .267 batting average with 15 home runs and 52 runs batted in. This past year was his rookie season, and he was back in his home country playing for the Aragua Tigers in Venezuela's winter league. The Nationals could not confirm the kidnapping, but they published a statement citing Tiger's spokeswoman Kathe Vilera. Ramos http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/10/world/americas/...ml?npt=NP1

Soldier found guilty of murdering Afghans, sentenced

Army Staff Sgt. Calvin Gibbs has been sentenced to life in military prison with eligibility for parole in 10 years. A military court-martial Thursday found Gibbs guilty of murdering three Afghan civilians, illegally cutting off pieces of their corpses to keep as "souvenirs" and planting weapons to make the men appear as if they were Taliban fighters killed in legitimate firefights. He was reduced in rank to private and ordered to forfeit all pay and benefits. Whatever sentence Gibbs serves will be reduced by the 547 days he has already spent in prison. "He said they were all dirty savages," prosecutor Maj. Andre Leblanc said at Gibbs' sentencing hearing. "He is the savage, not the innocent Afghans he murdered. It is monstrous. Pacquiao opens wallet, heart to those in need

When one of his sparring partners said he was getting married, Manny Pacquiao helped the newlyweds buy a house. When the poor province in which he grew up in the Philippines needed a hospital, he ponied up some of the money for one. When his country had elections, Pacquiao ran twice for and finally won a post in congress. He helped start one program to give cattle to farmers and another to give small motors to fishermen for their boats. No doubt, the boxing champ has a soft heart.http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/11/us/manny-pacqui...?hpt=hp_c3
